Michail Antonio is in talks with Charlton Athletic over a potential return to football for the ex-West Ham striker, who has not played domestically since he was involved in a serious car crash in December 2024.

Antonio, 35, was fortunate to escape death after crashing his car in Essex over 15 months ago. He suffered multiple leg fractures in the incident and completed his rehab and recovery with West Ham before leaving the east Londoners in the summer following the expiration of his contract.

The former Reading and Nottingham Forest man has since held talks with Brentford and Leicester City as he seeks a return to full-time football.

But while a move has yet to materialise, Antonio could now be offered a lifeline in the Championship by Charlton.

BBC Sport claim that there has been dialogue between Antonio and the Addicks, who are fighting to retain their second-tier status under Nathan Jones after winning the League One play-offs last year.

The report notes that discussions have centred around a short-term deal with Jones, who does have space to add a free agent to his Charlton squad, said to feel that Antonio can 'bring value' to the team's bid to beat the drop.

Antonio opened up on the extent of his injuries last year, revealing that he 'shattered' his femur bone in four places. He stressed that he would play again, though, and featured in the CONCACAF Gold Cup for Jamaica back in the summer.

“I am 100 per cent [sure] I’ll be back on the pitch,” he told the BBC back in March.

“This is what I’m focused on and this is why I’m in six days a week. Mentally, I believe so too, because I never give up. I always push myself. This is just another setback and it’s not going to stop me.”
