Snow is officially falling in various parts of the UK right now, including in the north of England and Scotland - and even more is on the way, the Met Office has warned.

Durham, Leeds and various other parts of the north of England, as well as Scotland, woke up to snow on Friday morning as the 17-hour snowstorm took hold.

Snow warnings have been in place in England and Scotland between 7pm last night and 12 pm today by the Met Office, with possible travel disruption and risk of injury predicted by the forecaster in the affected areas.

Snow is already causing travel chaos where it's falling. National Highways said the A66 is closed between the A67 near Bowes in County Durham and the A685 near Brough in Cumbria because of "concentrated snowfall".

It added: "National Highways area team crews are on scene with winter treatment vehicles working to clear and treat the carriageway; however, forecasts predict that snowfall will continue in the area throughout the morning.

"Units from Cumbria Police are also on scene assisting to clear the traffic.

"Road users travelling across the Pennines are advised to plan ahead and consider alternate routes."

The Met Office's warning says: "Outbreaks of rain will fall as snow over higher hills initially, before the snow starts to fall to lower levels through Thursday evening. Any settling snow will mainly be confined to high ground, above 200 metres. 2 to 5 cm is possible, and above 300 metres, a few locations may see as much as 10 cm.

"The rain and snow is expected to clear south during the early hours of Friday with temperatures expected to fall quickly as skies clear, leading to ice on untreated surfaces."

The list of 24 areas of the UK expecting to see snow on Friday, according to the Met Office maps are:

  • Darlington

  • Durham

  • Gateshead

  • Hartlepool

  • Middlesbrough

  • Newcastle upon Tyne

  • North Tyneside

  • Northumberland

  • Redcar and Cleveland

  • Greater Manchester

  • The Met Office, in its advice to households, added: "Keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy. Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush, reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls.

"If you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery. Similarly, if cycling, try and stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated.

"Snowy, wintry weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous. Keep yourself and others safe by planning your route, giving yourself extra time for your journey. Check for road closures or delays to public transport and amend plans if necessary."
