There are many centers of faith in Mithilanchal of Bihar but ‘Videshwarnath Mahadev Temple’ or Baba Bideshwar Sthan in Jhanjharpur of Madhubani district is the main place among them. According to mythological beliefs, this temple is directly to King Janak of Videha. There is a discussion that this temple got its name ‘Videshwar’ from the word ‘Videha’, which means ‘Lord of Videha’. Local people consider it the younger brother of Baba Vaidyanath Dham. People believe that offering water here gives the same results as in Devghar.
Talking about history, this temple is very important not only from religious but also archaeological point of view. There are inscriptions in ‘Mithilakshar’ script on the walls of the temple, which show that an attempt was made to renovate this old temple around 1300 AD.
According to mythological beliefs, the Shivalinga installed here is ‘Swayambhu’, which means it has manifested itself. According to the first perception, the importance of this temple for the people of Mithilanchal is similar to that of ‘Chhota Deoghar’ while some people also consider it to be similar to Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Overall, despite different beliefs, this place is a center of great reverence and faith among Shiva devotees. Even today people follow the traditions and beliefs here with full devotion.
During Mahashivratri, there is a huge crowd of devotees here. Devotees bring Ganga water from Sultanganj and perform Jalabhishek of Baba. Statues of Mother Parvati and Nandi are installed along with the main Shivalinga in the temple premises. A unique tradition here is to Lord Bhairavnath. It is said that on the day of Bhadra Purnima, the entire Shiva family meets here, and devotees come from far and wide to see it.
There is a fair like atmosphere here during the month of Sawan and Makar Sankranti of Magh. Lakhs of devotees come here to perform Jalabhishek of Mahadev. The Mundan and Upanayana rituals performed here are considered particularly fruitful.
This temple is located in Videshwar village near Jhanjharpur-Darbhanga State Highway. Lohana Road Railway Station is the nearest option for travelers coming by train.
