10-month-old Elin Sherin Abraham has become Kerala's youngest organ donor after being declared brain-dead at the hospital, giving new life to five people. Her parents, Arun Abraham and Sherin Ann John, decided to donate her organs. The girl's liver, two kidneys, heart valve and cornea were donated.
A six-month-old baby undergoing treatment received a liver, making him the youngest child to undergo a posthumous liver transplant in the state. The kidney was donated to another child, while heart valves and corneas were also transplanted to needy patients. Health Minister Veena George heartily thanked the grieving parents and said that their decision will help in saving many lives.
Elin was left brain-dead after a road accident at Pallam Boorma Junction in Pathanamthitta district on February 5. There a car coming from the front collided with his car. He suffered serious injuries, and his mother and grandparents were also seriously injured. After initial treatment in Changanassery and Tiruvalla, the girl was airlifted to Kochi, where she was declared brain-dead on 13 February. Soon after this the family gave consent for organ donation.
With the support of the Home Department, the organs were transported from the hospital to different medical centers in Thiruvananthapuram in coordination with KNOS (Kerala Network for Organ Sharing). Officials said the donation sends a strong message of hope amid tragedy. (ANI)
