After this, she decided to continue farming on her husband’s ancestral land without getting tired. The land in Kavitaal village of Raichur district was completely barren, rocky and hilly. The first few years were very difficult. In 2006, after continuous hard work, he started cultivating pomegranates. Pomegranate proved suitable as a low-water crop and within a few years started earning Rs 1 to 2 lakh per season.

But in 2011-12, a disease called bacterial blight destroyed the entire garden. All the trees had to be uprooted as per the advice of the experts. Even after years of hard work were wasted, he did not give up. Under the guidance of an agricultural consultant, he adopted the integrated farming model and established ‘Kavita Mishra Chandan Farm’.

White sandalwood is mainly cultivated in this farm. Apart from this, various horticultural crops like mango, guava, sitafal, amla, jambhul, tamarind, coconut, banana, coffee, pepper, turmeric have been cultivated. By planting teak and red sandalwood trees, they have transformed agriculture into agroforestry. Diversified crops increased sources of income and reduced risk.

Today, Kavita Mishra earns an annual income of around Rs 40 lakh from her farm. They estimate a potential return of several crores of rupees per acre. Overcoming traditional constraints, natural constraints and disease, they have achieved success through perseverance, innovation and scientific methods. Their story continues to inspire rural women and create a model for modern, sustainable agriculture.
