Biathlete Emilien Jacquelin says he will get revenge on Sturla Holm Laegreid after the Norwegian confessed to cheating on his exgirlfriend in an interview that has since gone viral. After winning his first bronze in the men's 20km individual, Laegreid used his postrace interview to publicly admit to the affair in a dramatic attempt to win back his expartner.

"There's someone I wanted to share this with who might not be watching today," he said. "Six months ago, I met the love of my life and the most beautiful and kindest person in the world. And three months ago I made my biggest mistake and cheated on her. I had a gold medal in my life. I only have eyes for her. I don't know what I want to achieve by saying this. I wish I could share it with her."

Meanwhile, France's Jacquelin, who finished just twotenths behind Laegreid in fourth, couldn't resist taking a swipe at the Norwegian in his postrace interview. "I was beaten by an unfaithful guy," he told VG Sport. "I will f*** him on Sunday, we'll see."

Laegreid's exgirlfriend has since provided a response by speaking anonymously in the Norwegian newspaper VG. She said she 'did not choose to be put in this position.'

"It's hard to forgive - even after a declaration of love in front of the whole world," she claimed. "We have been in contact, and he is aware of how I feel about this."

On Wednesday, Norway's state broadcaster NRK published a statement from Laegreid in which he apologised to both his exgirlfriend and [Johan-Olav] Botn. "I deeply regret bringing up this personal story on what was a day of celebration for Norwegian biathlon," Laegreid told NRK. "I am not quite myself these days, and I am not thinking clearly.

"My apologies go to Johan-Olav, who deserved all the attention after winning gold. My apologies also go to my ex-girlfriend, who unwillingly ended up in the media spotlight. I hope she is doing well.

"I cannot change what has happened, but I will now put this behind me and focus on the Olympics. I will not be answering any further questions about this."
