An engineer linked to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has been suspended following a tragic incident where a section of an under-construction viaduct in Mulund collapsed, resulting in one fatality and three injuries.
Satyajit Salve, the executive engineer overseeing the Mumbai Metro Line 4 project, faced suspension as directed by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Shinde emphasized that officials who jeopardize public safety will face consequences, and he confirmed that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority would cover the medical costs for the injured individuals.
The collapse occurred on Saturday around 12:20 PM near the Mulund fire station along Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg.
Social media footage captured a substantial concrete block, seemingly part of the viaduct's parapet, crashing onto an auto rickshaw and a car.
The deceased has been identified as Ramdhani Yadav, aged 46, who was seated in the back of the auto rickshaw at the time of the incident.
Among the injured, Rajkumar Indrajeet Yadav is reported to be in critical condition in intensive care, while Mahendra Pratap Yadav and Deepa Ruhiya are currently stable.
A first information report has been filed under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to culpable homicide and criminal conspiracy against various personnel involved in the project, including managers, engineers, a supervisor, and a worker.
So far, five individuals have been arrested in connection with the collapse.
The metro development authority has initiated a high-level inquiry to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
