There is a Shiva temple amidst the high hills of Kaimur in Rohtas district of Bihar, which the devotees remain surprised by. It is known as ‘Guptadham’ or Gupteshwar Dham. The biggest specialty of this cave is that holy water keeps dripping from the mountains drop by drop around the clock on the Shivling here. Devotees consume this water considering it as God’s blessing and Prasad.
This place is not only famous for its religious importance but coming here is also no less than a thrill. During the month of Shivratri and Sawan, lakhs of people gather here, who cross this difficult path and come to see Mahadev.
If mythology is to be believed, the history of this cave is to Bhasmasur. It is said that when Bhasmasura got the boon from Lord Shiva to ‘burn anyone’s head to ashes’, he set out to try it on Shiva himself. To save his life, Mahadev had taken shelter in this cave. For this reason it is called ‘Gupteshwar’ Dham.
After going about 363 feet deep inside the cave, a big water reservoir is found, which the local people call ‘Patal Ganga’. The path of the cave is very narrow and full of darkness, where one can move forward only with the help of artificial light. The special thing is that ancient rock paintings are also seen on the walls here, which further strengthens its historicity.
This Dham is situated in Chenari block, about 35 kilometers from the district headquarters Sasaram. To reach here, devotees have to climb five hills and cross the ‘Durgavati’ river five times. Despite the difficult path, the unwavering faith in Baba draws the devotees here. People bring Ganga water from Buxar and perform Jalabhishek here and make their wishes.
