Nestled in County Waterford, Ireland, lies this idyllic town, where an imposing castle and flourishinggardens create the perfect setting for a peaceful day out.

On the shores of the River Blackwater in the county's northwest corner sits Lismore, a modest village brimming with fascinating history. Despite its compact size, home to just over 1,300 inhabitants, it's dominated by a magnificent castle, cathedral and several other buildings of historical significance.

Castle

The original castle on this striking site dates back to 1185, perched at the water's edge with a commanding presence over the surrounding landscape.

Though it's been reconstructed twice since then, much of what stands today was redesigned in the Gothic style throughout the 19th century. Initially owned by the Earls of Desmond, then the Earls of Cork, it eventually transferred to the Cavendish family in 1753.

Currently, it serves as the Irish residence of the Duke of Devonshire, home to Lord and Lady Burlington, the son and daughter-in-law of the 12th Duke. Whilst portions of the property remain in use by the family, and the castle isn't available for public tours, they do provide an exclusive accommodation experience.

A 'luxury venue' within the castle can be hired for between eight and 12 overnight guests, with capacity for up to 27 people for private functions or celebrations.

Gardens

Whilst the castle itself remains off-limits to visitors, the public can freely explore all 10 acres of Lismore Castle Gardens, alongside its on-site art gallery and café. Whether you're a dedicated gardening enthusiast or simply someone who enjoys strolling through stunning surroundings, the grounds are all tucked within the castle's 17th-century defensive walls.

The picturesque grounds are thought to be the oldest cultivated gardens in Ireland and boast spectacular vistas. Across the expansive estate, visitors will discover a diverse array of plants and trees, all meticulously maintained by the gardening team, plus a surprise sculpture collection tucked away throughout.

One guest commented: "Always such a beautiful place to visit. The gardens are well tended to, yet not overly manicured, and the environment and nature seem to be a priority. Whilst I love to go in June when the roses and gardens are in full colour, it has plenty to offer outside of this."

Places to eat

Following a leisurely spell admiring the castle views and exploring its grounds, Main Street in Lismore boasts several outstanding dining establishments. There's even a restaurant that TripAdvisor reviewers have crowned as the premier food destination, situated in the shadow of the magnificent Lismore Castle.

Foley's on the Mall continues to impress diners, with glowing reviews praising its authentic Irish pub ambience. One satisfied customer shared: "Highly recommended. A super-extensive tapas menu. The quality of the dishes and their presentation was excellent. Five-star service."

Other local favourites include Lizzie Brien's Café, Fuller's Bistro, Rose's West End Bar, alongside several highly-rated takeaway establishments. Describing their meal at Fuller's Bistro as "fabulous", one patron said they were already looking forward to returning.

A diner enthused: "I have to say the food is so awesome, and we really enjoyed it very much. The staff and the owner, Sandra, are so nice and friendly. Truly well worth going there. I would recommend this place to anyone. Can't wait to visit again."
