The Premier League and Leicester have both launched appeals against the Foxes six-point deduction with top-flight bosses wanting to see a greater punishment.

Leicester were hit with the deduction last month after being charged with breaching the EFL’s profit and sustainability rules during their promotion-winning season, which came in 2023/24. The Foxes have appealed the judgement, believing it too be excessive, but the Premier League wants it to go further.

The Telegraph reports that they want a more severe punishment for the struggling Championship side - seeking a potential hit of 12 points and a major fine.

The Midlands outfit were allowed £83million in “permitted losses” over a three-year period up to last season, but ended up exceeding that figure by almost £21m. Leicester claimed the Championship title ahead of Ipswich when Enzo Maresca was their boss.

They were unable to retain their Premier League status, which would've bought notably more riches, as they were relegated straight back into the second tier.

Leicester are already in the midst of a relegation battle in the Championship this season as they face the prospect of successive drops down the pyramid. Their deduction currently leaves them in 22nd in the league whilst they are winless in seven in all competitions. As things stand they're two points from safety.

Without the deduction they would find themselves in 19th, still precariously above the relegation zone, while an additional deduction would drop them below Oxford to 23rd and hand them a huge task in the final months of the season.

On Wednesday, Leicester appointed Gary Rowett as their manager until the end of the season whilst the club's chairman admitting they are "in a fight for survival" in the Championship. The club had sacked Marti Cifuentes in January after only a matter of months in charge.

In a previous legal battle the Premier League had argued that Leicester should be deducted 12 points or fined £20m, but the panel ruled the club’s improving financial position was a mitigating factor.

Now the league is appealing on the grounds that the extra point penalty should be imposed in addition to the six points already deducted, while Leicester believe they should only be fined and suffer no sporting sanction.
