Indian woman arrested Singapore jail: Why did an Indian-origin woman in Singapore slap a 73-year-old driver over a taxi fare of SGD 24? Not AIIMS, but hospital treatment and 2 weeks jail - what is the truth of this controversy?
Taxi Fare Dispute Singapore News: An Indian-origin woman, 36-year-old Shalini Devarajan, has been sentenced to two weeks jail by a Singapore court. This happened because he allegedly caused injury to the 73-year-old taxi driver by slapping him. The incident started from a dispute over taxi fare and payment.
What happened in the taxi?
The court was told that the incident took place on November 11, 2025. Shalini Devarajan took a taxi alone and asked the driver to take her to her apartment in Yishun Housing Estate. The driver realized that the woman smelled of alcohol. As soon as they reached the apartment block, the driver asked for SGD 24 fare. Devarajan said he had neither cash nor a cashless payment method.
Did the driver's request go unheeded?
Shalini then called someone and said she would go to her unit to collect the money. The driver first asked her to leave her phone there and follow him, but Shalini refused. At around 4.20 pm, he slapped the driver on his left cheek. After this, the driver felt pain and got one day medical leave for treatment in the hospital.
What action did the police take?
The taxi fare was not received and Shalini was arrested the same day. The prosecution sought compensation of approximately SGD 172 for the victim's medical bills. Shalini claimed that she had no money and did not know that she had a SGD 50 note in her pocket. After completing the legal process, the court sentenced Devarajan to two weeks in jail.
