  • 2 cups idli rice

  • 1 cup urad dal (washed)

  • 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds

  • salt as per taste

  • water as required

  • Oil or ghee (for greasing)


For seasoning (optional)



  • 1 tbsp ghee or oil

  • 1/2 tsp mustard

  • 8-10 curry leaves

  • 1 tsp idli podi (masala)


How to make Goli Idli


Goli Idli is a flavourful dish which is very much liked. To prepare this, first wash idli rice and urad dal separately and soak them for 4-5 hours. Soak fenugreek seeds with lentils. After soaking, grind the pulses in a mixer to a fine and fluffy consistency.


Grind the rice a little coarsely. Now mix both in a big vessel, add salt and mix well. Cover it and let it ferment in a warm place for 8-10 hours. The batter will rise and double in size.


Use mini idli stand for goli idli. Grease the molds with a little oil or ghee. Now fill the prepared batter in the molds with a spoon. Keep in mind that do not fill the mold completely, leave a little space so that the idli can rise.

Heat water in idli cooker or steamer. Place the stand inside and close the lid and steam on medium flame for 8-10 minutes. After turning off the gas, let it cool for 2-3 minutes and then take out the idlis with the help of a spoon.


If you want to make it more fun, heat ghee in a pan. Add mustard seeds and when it crackles, add curry leaves. Now add prepared mini idlis to it and fry it lightly. Sprinkle idli podi on top and mix well. This will double the taste of Goli Idli.


Serve hot goli idli with sambar and coconut chutney. It is also a great option for tiffin and easily fits in children’s lunch box. Homemade soft and spongy Goli Idli is not only healthy but is also a delicious dish prepared with less oil.
