A new chapter is going to be added to the public transport system of the country. Meerut city of Uttar Pradesh is set to become the first city in India where metro and high-speed Namo Bharat trains will run on the same track. of this unique project 22 February 2026 It is expected to start, which will not only change the local transportation of Meerut, but will also give a new direction to the connectivity of Delhi-NCR.
This project is an excellent example of integration of urban transport, which will provide passengers with the benefit of two different types of trains under one system.
The most special thing about this entire project is its unique integration model. Meerut Metro and NaMo Bharat trains of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) will use the same track infrastructure. This means that passengers will not have to worry about changing from one service to another. It will work as an integrated transport system, which will save travel time and make travel much easier.
This is the first such experiment in the country in Meerut, which can become an example for other cities also in future. This makes better use of resources and also reduces construction costs.
The Meerut Metro corridor will connect the southern part of the city with the northern end. Meerut South to Modipuram This route is about 21 kilometers long. A total of 13 stations have been built on it, which will cover major residential and commercial areas of the city. With a maximum speed of 120 kilometers per hour, it will be one of the fastest metro services in the country.
The stations falling on this route are: Meerut South, Pratappur, Rithani, Shatabdi Nagar, Brahmpuri, Meerut Central (Underground), Bhainsali (Underground), Begumpul (Underground), MES Colony, Daurali, Meerut North, Modipuram and Modipuram Depot. According to officials, despite stopping at all the stations, this distance can be covered in just 30 minutes, which will provide great relief from the traffic jam of the city.
The Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor will also become fully operational on the same day that Meerut Metro will start, i.e. on 22 February 2026. According to NCRTC, the remaining sections from Sarai Kale Khan to New Ashok Nagar (5 km) and Meerut South to Modipuram (21 km) will be opened on this day. With this, this entire 82.15 km long high-speed corridor will be available to the passengers.
With the completion of this corridor, the distance from Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan to Meerut can be covered in less than an hour. Presently Namo Bharat train is running on a stretch of about 55 kilometers between New Ashok Nagar, Delhi and Meerut South.
Meerut Metro coaches are made of lightweight stainless steel, which saves energy. About 700 passengers will be able to travel at a time in this air-conditioned train with three coaches. For the convenience of passengers, it will have comfortable seating seats, luggage racks, mobile and laptop charging ports, besides reserved seats for women, elderly and disabled.
For security reasons, there will be a network of CCTV cameras on trains and stations. Apart from this, facilities like platform screen door, lift and wheelchair will also be provided. It is noteworthy that Meerut will be the fifth city of Uttar Pradesh to start metro service. Earlier, metro was operating in Lucknow, Kanpur, Noida-Greater Noida and Agra.
