Newswise — Following the death of actor James Van Der Beek, who had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer, health experts are urging increased awareness of early-onset colorectal cancer and the lifesaving importance of screening.

Colorectal cancer is now the leading cause of cancer-related death among men and women under age 50, according to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Mortality rates have increased 1.1% per year since 2005, moving colorectal cancer from the fifth leading cause of cancer death in the early 1990 s to first in 2023 among younger adults.

Jennifer Molokwu, M.D., M.P.H., director of Cancer Prevention and Control in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso can speak on:

  • Why Colorectal Cancer Screenings Matters

  • Incidence among Americans ages 20 to 39 is projected to increase 90% by 2030.

  • Nearly 60 Americans under age 50 are diagnosed every day.

  • That’s the equivalent of one diagnosis every 25 minutes.

Yet colorectal cancer is highly preventable and treatable when caught early.

  • The five-year survival rate is 91% when detected early.

  • Survival drops to 15% when diagnosed at later stages.

  • When cancer is found before it spreads, a patient’s five-year survival rate is about four times higher than when diagnosed late.

“Early detection through screening remains one of the most effective tools to reduce colorectal cancer deaths.” Stated Dr. Molokwu.
