Former Indian cricketer Murali Kartik has shared some strong thoughts about India’s lineup for their Super Eight showdown against the South African national cricket team in the T20 World Cup 2026. This exciting match is set to unfold in Ahmedabad on February 22.

Kartik stressed the importance of bringing all-rounder Axar Patel back into the team, predicting that he’ll play a crucial role in this important game. It’s worth noting that Axar was given a break during India’s last group-stage match against the Netherlands.

When discussing India’s team strategy, Kartik pointed out that opting for eight batters to enhance batting depth has been effective so far in the tournament. However, he did voice some worries about Abhishek Sharma’s recent performance, hoping to see him step up in the upcoming match. Kartik mentioned that Abhishek’s duel with South Africa’s top bowler, Kagiso Rabada, could be a game changer.

"Axar Patel comes back. He's absolutely central to India's planning. I think the formula of going with eight batters has been working. The only bit for them is at the top of the order. Kagiso has not fired as the way they would have wanted. They will hope that the Kagiso vs Abhishek battle falls in favor of Abhishek," said Kartik on Cricbuzz.

Abhishek Sharma Under Pressure After Three Consecutive Ducks

Abhishek has had a rough start to the tournament, struggling to score and recording three consecutive ducks in his last three matches. His slump has raised concerns for the team as they head into the Super Eight stage. While Kartik didn’t delve into technical advice, he expressed a simple hope that Abhishek would find his form at this critical point in the competition.

"They would want these guys to come back roaring into form. Abhishek is yet to open his account and there has been a certain pattern to his dismissals as well. It will be interesting how he looks at it. Enough people are having their own say on how he should go about it," said Kartik.

Kartik also touched on Tilak Varma’s performance, noting that he hasn’t quite hit his stride in the tournament yet. Despite the ups and downs, Kartik remains optimistic about the young batter, believing it’s just a matter of time before he finds his rhythm. He added that if Tilak can get going, India could really have a great time with the bat in Ahmedabad. So far, in four matches, Tilak has scored 106 runs with an average of 26.50 and a strike rate of 120.45.

"With regards to Tilak Varma, Surya wants him at three and he's had a good run there. It is maybe a question of time and a matter of time. If he also starts working out maybe they will enjoy Ahmedabad tomorrow. It is to his liking,” said Kartik.
