New Delhi : A strong earthquake broke the silence of the night just off the coast of Sabah state of Borneo island located in the eastern part of Malaysia. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), this earthquake was of 7.1 magnitude and its epicenter was in the sea about 100 kilometers northeast of Kota Kinabalu city. The earthquake occurred at around 12:57 midnight local time. Its depth is said to be about 620 kilometers due to which there was not much impact on the surface. So far, no information has been received about any loss of life or property or tsunami.
This earthquake occurred at midnight on Sunday when most people were sleeping. The focal point was north-east of Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah and a major tourist destination. Due to the great depth, the tremors were felt far and wide but the intensity was low. Local residents have reported mild to moderate vibration.
USGS confirmed that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 619.8 kilometers. Earthquakes with this depth are called deep focus earthquakes. In these, the energy coming to the surface is less, which causes less damage to the buildings. This is why there has been no news of any major destruction or casualties yet.
Since the epicenter of the earthquake was in the sea but the depth was very high, there was no possibility of a tsunami. Experts say that in an earthquake above 7.0, if the depth is less than 30 kilometers, then the risk of tsunami increases. The situation was opposite here due to which a sigh of relief is being breathed in the coastal areas.
Many people in Kota Kinabalu and surrounding areas felt sudden tremors at night and came out of their homes. Some shared videos on social media that showed slight shaking. The administration has appealed to the people to remain calm and trust the official information. No emergency has been declared at present.
Malaysia’s meteorological department and international agencies are monitoring the situation. Earthquakes occur occasionally on the island of Borneo because the region falls under the influence of tectonic plates. Experts believe that this time the major danger has been averted due to greater depth. There is a possibility of further aftershocks but at present the situation is under control.
