After days of heavy makeup and buildup, your first instinct might be to deep clean and scrub. But both Dr. Sthalekar and aesthetic expert Dr. Geeta Mehra Fazalbhoy recommend a gentler approach.


Begin with a gentle, non-foaming cleanser that effectively removes sweat and other residues without stripping the skin of its natural oils. The aim here is to cleanse the skin while maintaining its lipid barrier. Next, apply a moisturizing serum that comprises components such as hyaluronic acid or panthenol to replenish the skin’s moisture level.


Niacinamide works great at this stage. It calms down the skin, lessens excessive sebum secretion, and enhances the skin’s protective barrier. Besides, ceramides can be of great help in healing microinjuries caused by the long-term wearing of makeup and exposure to environmental stress. End your routine with a light moisturizer to lock in the hydration.

Handle Breakouts Carefully

Anything from a tough spot to one that feels inflamed, post-event breakouts are common. Go for low-strength salicylic acid rather than harsh spot treatment, as it helps to gently clear pores without irritating the already sensitised skin.


According to Dr. Fazalbhoy, if your skin looks dull, you should use a mild glycolic cleanser for light exfoliation just once or twice a week.


After inflammation, skin tends to be more sensitive to pigmentation, and this is why one should never skip applying sunscreen. In fact, daily sun protection is a must, even if your days are mostly spent indoors.

Consider Skin Fasting

Dr. Fazalbhoy refers to this step as skin fasting, a minimalist approach that lets your skin naturally reset itself. Hydrate the eye area, but stay clear of potent actives. Take a makeup, free day or two to give your skin a chance to breathe and recover fully.


Incorporating a vitamin C serum in the morning can be beneficial for the skin’s brightness, carrying on the rest of the care simply and soothingly.

Internal Healing Is Key

Topical treatment is not enough. The real healing takes place inside. Both experts highlight the importance of hydration, consumption of antioxidant-rich foods, and sufficient sleep. Once your circadian rhythm is in tune and cortisol levels are down, skin cell renewal takes place more effectively without having to do anything.


Your skin has worked overtime during wedding week. For at least seven days after, focus on hydration, barrier repair, and consistent rest. Avoid piling on strong treatments. When given time and gentle support, the skin barrier stabilises, inflammation reduces, and overall skin health improves in a lasting way.
