Lots of people suffer with migraines, and doctors often issue advice on techniques to help people deal with the health complaint. Indeed, over a billion people are thought to experience them regularly around the world, which is why any expert advice on methods to manage them always comes in handy.
Doctor Raj Arora, who's known for appearing on ITV's This Morning, recently shared some essential advice to help people. If you're someone who suffers with the health issue, you need to pay attention, as the guidance is well worth heeding as it can help ease your pain when you need quick relief.
It's not the only way you can try and ease symptoms either. Previously, it was revealed a common cold remedy could also help to aid the problem.
Dr Arora said: "Do you suffer from migraines? Here's my number one hack as a GP. Come with me. Now obviously, disclaimer, if you've got migraines or headaches, you must go and see your GP.
"Make sure you do have a diagnosis of migraines before you go away and try and treat yourself. But, if you already know you've got migraines, you get them quite frequently, you're on medications for example [and] you're looking at what else can help you, this might be the answer."
Looking through options you can buy at a pharmacy, she added: "Down here, you'll find on the migraine or pain relief shelf, lots of different options. You have 4head, you've got Kool 'n' Soothe, you've got soothing gel sheets you can put on.
"You've even got migraine head wraps, and all of them basically work by cooling the area, and the idea behind this is when you cool the area - around the head, the back of the neck, wherever your headache is - you happen to vasoconstrict vessels, which can help to reduce inflammation.
"Also, this targeted cooling can basically slow down nerve signals as well to help reduce the pain. It can help to aid muscle relaxation as well, so actually helping to reduce the impact of the pain you're having with your migraine.
"This is a really cool way of adding in something a little bit extra that will relax you, cool you down and help to manage that migraine."
Dr Arora also added it's really important to monitor migraines. This is because, when severe, they can actually impact vision, speech and daily function.
Sometimes, she said the triggers aren't always obvious. If you experience them often, you should never ignore them.
What to know about migrainesA migraine is a neurological condition characterised by recurrent, moderate-to-severe throbbing or pulsing headaches. Usually, it tends to impact one side of the head.
The condition often comes with nausea, vomiting and severe sensitivity to light, sound or smell. Episodes can last anywhere between four to 72 hours if left untreated.
Little you may know, cooling products, as outlined by Dr Arora, can help to aid pain experienced by migraines. Cooling agents and cold therapy (cryotherapy) can work to manage migraines by providing temporary relief from pain and discomfort.
Even though they are not a cure, they are highly effective and safe. When used alongside other treatments, they can be a big help.
As Dr Arora points out, you should always seek the advice of a doctor before attempting to treat migraines. The NHS website also offers advice.
It states: "You may have to try a combination of medicines before you find something that works. A GP may also recommend making changes to your lifestyle to help manage your migraines, such as eating at regular times and drinking less caffeine.
"If your migraines are severe, you might be offered other things to help, such as learning relaxation techniques and acupuncture." Further guidance can be found on the website.
