Tucked away on the Llŷn Peninsula, a 30-mile expanse dubbed 'The Land's End of Wales' and designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, lies a charming little cove that tourists often overlook. Situated just beyond Ty-hen is an utterly idyllic destination for a seaside escape, far removed from the crowds of Wales' busiertourist hotspots.

The west-facing haven of Porth Iago presents a picture-perfect setting, encircled by verdant headlands that form a secluded sanctuary. The shoreline is relatively protected, providing an ideal location for a peaceful swim in tranquil waters.

Alternatively, enjoy an early morning stroll whilst the coast remains undisturbed, followed by a leisurely day on the sand in what feels like your own private paradise.

The northern edge of thebeachproves popular with anglers keen to try their luck, as abundant bass can be found amongst the rock pools. Meanwhile, others opt for canoeing or kayaking on this concealed bay.

Reaching the location requires passing through a farm that offers a paid car park, usually costing approximately £5 to £6, whilst the path down to the sand can be quite steep. Dogs are welcome on the beach, and toilet facilities are available at the farm for visitors requiring them.

Campsite

Taking its name from the beach, Porth Iago Campsite provides campers with the opportunity to set up camp overlooking one of Britain's most breathtaking beaches and experience a stay steeped in coastal tranquillity. Operating as a family-run establishment since 1918, the site occupies working farmland that remains active to this day.

The campsite embraces a back-to-basics philosophy, allowing the stunning natural surroundings to speak for themselves. All types of campers are welcome, whether arriving with tents, campervans or motorhomes, with plenty of space available across the grounds for those seeking privacy.

Given its popularity, the site fills up quickly, operating strictly on a pre-booking basis – securing your pitch early is essential for guaranteeing availability.

One guest wrote on TripAdvisor: "This campsite is an absolute gem for anyone who loves being by the sea. The views are breathtaking – you're surrounded by the ocean on all sides, with a private beach of soft white sand and dramatic cliffs just a short walk away. Watching the sun set over the water from the campsite is pure magic."

However, some visitors have highlighted the "basic" amenities available. The site provides two toilets and two separate shower facilities, designated for men and women respectively, which campers report cost £1 per use.

For those fancying a change of scene, several larger and more accessible beaches lie within easy reach, perfect for a day of sunbathing, swimming or water-based activities. Traeth Porthor beach is situated nearby and offers a stunning coastline under National Trust protection.

Notably, the beach voluntarily operates as a 'no smoking' zone, in keeping with ASH Wales, which seeks to "safeguard nature, wildlife and community wellbeing". Parking is available 300 metres from the beach, though reaching the shore requires a steep descent down a gravel path, making it rather inaccessible for some visitors.

Adjacent to Porth Largo on the right lies Traeth Penllech beach, a sweeping sandy expanse that visitors are likening to 'Cornwall's best' beaches. One recent visitor said: "I love Traeth Penllech (Penllech Beach) and decided it's finally time I posted a review.

"It's a beautiful, rugged stretch of coastline which feels quite different from the beaches on the south side of the Llyn Peninsula. There are lovely long stretches of light-coloured soft sand with imposing cliffs above. When the tide is out you can walk quite a way."
