Watermelon: During the summer days, a pile of watermelon is seen everywhere. Kalinga cools down the body, Kalinga increases the hydration needed by the body in summer. So we don’t feel tired and also get some relief from the sun. Whenever you go to the market, you can see 2 types of Kalingad Hamkhas. One is a dark black-green colored Kalingad and the other is a pale green striped Kalingad. In such cases, we often get confused that which one is the real Kalingad and which one will be sweet and tasty?

Kalingad which has green stripes on it is often called ‘Patteri Kalingad’ or ‘Disco Kalingad’ in rural or peasant parlance. On the other hand the Kalingad which is completely dark green or black in color is called ‘Kaal Kalingad’. There are some changes in the properties of both these Kalingadas.

The shell or bark of patteri kalingada is slightly thick. Due to this, this kalingad does not break easily during long journeys or transportation. Its inner core is pinkish-red in color. For people who don’t want too much sweetness, but want a bit of crisp and juicy fruit, this watermelon is perfect.

On the other hand, black kalinga is called “black” kalinga due to its dark outer skin. This Kalingada is pink-reddish inside, juicy and very sweet. It is because of this sweetness that it has been given the name “Sugar Queen”. If this Kalingad is eaten chilled in summer, it will cool down immediately.

Natural sugar gives the body energy. Black Kalinga contains about 92% water, making it great for hydration. It is also beneficial for skin and eyes due to its vitamin A and C. Potassium and magnesium are useful for the heart and muscles.
