New Delhi: Celebrations erupted across Jammu and Kashmir after their team scripted history by lifting the maiden Ranji Trophy title on the back of a 291-run first-innings lead against Karnataka. The victory triggered jubilant scenes in the Union territory marked by firecrackers and the distribution of sweets.
In the final, J&K posted a total of 584 runs in the first innings after electing to bat first at the KSCA Hubli Cricket Ground. Shubham Pundir struck 121 runs off 247 balls, while Yawer Hassan (88), Paras Dogra (70), Abdul Samad (61), Kanhaiya Wadhawan (70) and Sahil Lotra (72) also scored fifties.
Karnataka skipper Mayank Agarwal batted well and scored 160 runs off 266 balls, but other batters failed to deliver. Auqib Nabi picked up a fifer, which made a huge difference in the summit clash as the pacer dismissed KL Rahul, Agarwal and Karun Nair.
J&K declared their second innings on the score of 342/4 as opener Qamran Iqbal notched up an unbeaten 160 in 311 balls, while Sahil Lotra also amassed 101 off 226. They were just three runs away from stitching a 200-run partnership when the two skippers shook hands, with Jammu and Kashmir leading by a massive 633 runs.
