Every year, millions of Brits jet off to Spain for their holidays, keen to bask in the sunshine and immerse themselves in Spanish culture. The European hotspot has consistently been the go-to choice for UK holidaymakers, with Spain predicted to draw in a significant number of British tourists once again in 2026.
While holidays are undoubtedly an exciting time, it's important for anyone venturing to Spain to be fully informed about all rules and requirements. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) provides travel advice for over 220 countries and territories, including Spain.
However, there is one regulation that holidaymakers might not be aware of. On its Spain page, the FCDO advises: "Only use official registered or licensed taxis, or reputable transport companies you recognise. Licensing regulations differ across Spain and in certain cities pre-booking is required.
"Passengers caught using unlicensed taxi services are liable for fines of up to 600 euros. Make sure you book your taxi or airport transfer through a licensed firm."
Not only is using an unlicensed taxi illegal, but it could also pose a risk. Genuine taxis in Spain will have a clearly visible meter.
