Every household relies on bin men to collect the rubbish. Without them, our houses would become overrun with bin bags and recycling, and if you don't have a car, you'd have no way of getting rid of your rubbish at your local tip either, so the nation's bin men really do help to keep the country running.
In order to collect our rubbish, however, they often have to leave their lorries blocking the road for a short period of time while they empty the bins. This is a necessary part of their job, but it can be frustrating for motorists who need to drive down the roads they're blocking.
One bin man on social media has now poked fun at the tension between bin men and other motorists, sharing the way he reacts whenever the cars behind his lorry start to get "upset" at him for blocking the road.
Ashley, who posts under the name The No1 Binman, posted a video on TikTok of himself sitting in the driver's seat of his bin lorry and singing along to the 1999 hit Turn Around by Phats & Small.
He belted out the words: "Hey, what's wrong with you? You're looking kinda down to me." And he added in text on his video: "When the person behind the bin lorry is starting to get upset."
Ashley then encouraged drivers who get frustrated with the bin lorry to cheer up, as it was "nearly the weekend" when the video was filmed. Bin men don't tend to collect rubbish on the weekends, so if you're ever upset at being stuck behind one of their lorries, you can always look to the weekend ahead to help you get through the momentary frustration.
Commenters on the video were firmly on Ashley's side, too. Many of them said that his light-hearted musical video cheered them up, while others said they were thankful for the work he does collecting people's rubbish for them.
One person said: "Brilliant!" Another added: "You're as happy as my bin men, love it." A third wrote: "That's cheered me up, thanks."
When he's not sharing tongue-in-cheek videos about his job, Ashley can often be found on social media issuing important advice to people about what not to put in their bins to make sure their rubbish gets collected.
Recently, he looked ahead to the Easter period and made a video telling people which parts of Easter Egg packaging are recyclable, and which parts need to go in their general waste.
In general, he said the cardboard box that the egg comes in can go in the recycling bin, while the foil should go in general waste. Some councils may take foil in your plastic recycling, but only if it's not covered in chocolate. Not all councils accept foil as recycling, so you must check before you dispose of it.
Why binmen can refuse to collect your binsThere are a number of other reasons binmen may refuse to collect your rubbish that don't have anything to do with your bin being too full or the lid being open. They can also refuse to collect if your rubbish violates council guidelines, such as containing contaminated recycling, being excessively heavy, or if you include "side waste", which are bags left next to the bin.
Binmen may also refuse to collect your rubbish if you put non-recyclable items like food or soft plastics in your recycling bin, although they will often leave a sticker behind that explains the issue with your bins.
Recycling rules can vary slightly in different parts of the country. If you're unsure about anything, visit your council website for further guidance.
