WhatsApp meme scam: In today’s digital era, memes on social media have become a major source of entertainment for people. People share funny memes with friends and family every day, but now these memes are becoming the new weapon of cyber criminals. According to cyber security experts, some vicious fraudsters are sending such memes through WhatsApp which contain dangerous viruses or malicious code. Once a user falls into their trap, even his bank account may be in danger.
Actually, cyber criminals add such a code to the memes in the form of a link, file or image, which gets activated as soon as it is downloaded in the phone. In many cases, the user does not even know that malware has been installed on his phone. After this the virus tries to access the sensitive information present in the mobile like banking apps, passwords, OTP and other personal data.
Cyber experts say that such memes are often accompanied by an attractive message or lure to click, such as “Watch the funniest video”, “This meme is going viral now” or “Your photo has become a meme.” As soon as the user clicks on that link or file, the risk of his mobile getting hacked increases.
In some cases, this scam leads to a fake website, where the user is asked for banking details or login information. If a person fills this information by mistake, cyber thugs can withdraw money from his bank account.
Experts say that people need to be alert to avoid such dangers. Any meme, file or link coming from an unknown number should not be downloaded or opened without checking. Apart from this, it is considered safe to always keep updated antivirus in mobile and use only trusted apps.
Cyber security agencies also keep making people aware from time to time to avoid online fraud. If someone receives a suspicious message or meme, it might be a better move to delete it immediately and lodge a complaint on a cyber crime portal if necessary.
Experts believe that even small carelessness in the digital world can cause huge financial loss. Therefore, every message, link and meme coming on social media should be opened with caution, so that the trap of cyber criminals can be avoided.
