The Punjab Budget 2026–27 includes several allocations aimed at supporting rural employment, tourism and cultural activities across Punjab. The budget proposals were discussed following the presentation of the state’s financial plan by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema in the state assembly. According to information shared by the government, ₹1,500 crore has been proposed for a rural employment scheme designed to support livelihood opportunities in villages. The initiative is expected to be implemented through programmes linked with rural development and local governance structures across the state.
In addition to employment-related provisions, the budget includes ₹312 crore to facilitate a pilgrimage travel initiative known as the Tirath Yatra Scheme. Officials stated that the scheme is expected to benefit approximately 7.15 lakh citizens by enabling travel to various religious destinations. Another allocation mentioned in the budget is ₹100 crore for activities related to the 650th birth anniversary of Guru Ravidas, a prominent spiritual figure whose teachings are widely followed in Punjab and other parts of India. Authorities indicated that the funds will be used for events and programmes connected with the commemoration.
Punjab’s Rural Development, Panchayat and Tourism Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sondh acknowledged the budgetary provisions and noted that the allocations could support development efforts in rural areas while also strengthening tourism and cultural activities in the state. He also referred to increased funding for the departments associated with tourism and cultural affairs. The minister expressed appreciation to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema for including provisions aimed at rural welfare and tourism development. According to him, the additional resources could contribute to initiatives intended to support village infrastructure, religious tourism and cultural programmes.
Officials indicated that the tourism and cultural affairs sectors are expected to play a role in promoting religious and heritage destinations within the state. Programmes associated with pilgrimage travel and cultural celebrations are often linked with tourism activity as well as community participation. State budgets generally outline financial priorities for the upcoming fiscal year, including allocations for social welfare, infrastructure, economic development and cultural initiatives. The proposed spending for rural employment, pilgrimage travel and cultural events forms part of the broader framework of public expenditure planned by the Punjab government for the 2026–27 financial year.
