New Delhi: India’s premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah became the most successful seamer in history of T20 World Cup following his player of the match performance in India’s 96-run title triumph over New Zealand.

Bumrah’s 4/15 in four overs helped India bowl put the Kiwis for 159 in 19 overs in chase of a record 256-run target in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

The right armer now has 40 wickets in 26 innings (average 13.60), to go ahead of retired Sri Lankan Lasith Malinga and South Africa’s Anrich Nortje.

Malinga and Nortje both have 38 wickets in the competition, in 31 innings at an average of 20.07 and 21 innings at an average of 12.00, respectively.

Bumrah is the fifth highest wicket-taker and the most successful Indian in the competition. His economy rate of 5.66 is the best among bowlers with at least 30 T20 World Cup wickets, ahead of (5.71) and New Zealand’s Trent Boult (5.93).

Bumrah is also the first pacer and third bowler overall to claim a four-wicket haul in knockouts of the competition, finishing it as the joint-highest wicket-taker of the 2026 edition alongside team-mate Varun Chakravarthy with 14 wickets at an average of 12.42 and an economy rate of 6.21.

In 2024, Bumrah was adjudged the player of the tournament with 15 wickets at an average of 8.27.

‘National treasure’

After his stellar performance, Bumrah received all-round praise, particularly from India skipper Suryakumar Yadav.

“Bumrah is a once-in a generation bowler. I can call him a national treasure. He knows how it needs to be done, he is the best in the business,” Yadav said after India’s victory.

“Bumrah is rightfully a national treasure. This man can make the best batsman of any opposition have a bad day. He has done that throughout this 2026 T20 World Cup. The way he has bowled in this tournament is nothing short of remarkable. He is the biggest asset of Team India,” former leg spinner Piyush Chawla told on Star Sport.

“Whenever India needs a wicket in a crucial phase, Bumrah steps up and comes to the rescue. We have seen that more often than not, in tough situations, the Captain looks to Bumrah. He knows he is one of the best.

“He has so many variations and weapons. But knowing when to use which weapon is very difficult to master. On this pitch in the final, where the ball was coming nicely onto the bat, Bumrah got all his four wickets using slower deliveries,” he added.
