New Delhi: The Indian women’s hockey team were held to a 2-2 draw by Scotland in their second match in the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup 2026 Qualifiers in Hyderabad on Monday. Having defeated Uruguay 4-0 in their opener on Sunday, India remain on top of the Pool B table.
Both India and Scotland have four points each, and in Pool B, after their draw on Monday. However, India are on top of the table based on their superior goal difference. On Monday, Navneet Kaur and Sunelita Toppo scored for India against Scotland to earn the hosts a hard-fought draw in the game.
Scotland drew the first blood in the game, when they opened the scoring through a penalty corner in the sixth minute after a defensive lapse from India. Scotland started the game strongly and made the most after India lost their defensive shape early in the game. Heather McEwan stepped to take the penalty corner and converted it to give Scotland the lead.
India responded well as they increased attacking pressure on Scotland and created a few chances. The hosts earned a couple of penalty corners in the first quarter but failed to convert any of those. India eventually managed to equalise with their third penalty corner in the 17th minute.
Despite an initial fumble, Navneet Kaur recovered well and slotted the ball past Scottish goalkeeper Jessica Buchanan to help India equalise 1-1. Scotland responded strongly in a bid to regain their lead. Indian goalkeeper Bichu Devi denied Amy Costello with a great save against her drag-flick to keep the score level at 1-1.
Sunelita gave India the lead in the 29th minute by tapping home from a rebound off a penalty corner following a scramble near the goal post. Her goal ensured India headed into the halftime with a 2-1 lead. However, their lead was short-lived as Scotland found the equaliser in the 33rd minute.
Fiona Burnet scored to make it 2-2 for Scotland. India upped the ante towards the end of the third quarter and earned multiple penalty corners, but failed to convert any. The two teams also failed to find the winner in the final quarter as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
