The thyroid is a vital gland in the body that produces thyroid hormones, which play a key role in regulating the body’s metabolic processes.

To produce these hormones, the thyroid gland uses iodine obtained from the diet. When the thyroid becomes overactive, it may produce excessive amounts of thyroid hormones, leading to a condition known as hyperthyroidism.

Hyperthyroidism can be caused by several factors, including Graves’ disease, toxic nodules, excessive iodine intake, and certain medications. If left untreated, this condition may lead to several health complications.

Some of the common symptoms of hyperthyroidism include anxiety, tremors, rapid heartbeat, sleep disturbances, unexplained weight loss, bulging eyes, and irregular menstrual cycles.

Certain foods can worsen the symptoms of this condition and should therefore be avoided by people with hyperthyroidism. Being aware of these foods can help in managing the condition more effectively.

# Iodine-Rich Foods

Iodine can stimulate the thyroid gland and increase its activity. Therefore, people with hyperthyroidism should limit or avoid foods high in iodine, such as seaweed and certain seafood. It is also advisable to reduce the use of iodised salt.

# Caffeine

Stimulants like coffee, tea, and other caffeinated beverages can worsen the symptoms of hyperthyroidism. It is better to replace these drinks with healthier alternatives such as fresh juices or herbal beverages.

# Whole Milk

Consuming whole milk may not be suitable for people with hyperthyroidism. Instead, opting for skimmed or low-fat milk can be a lighter and easier-to-digest option.

# Enriched Flour

Enriched flour contains fewer nutrients and has a high glycaemic index, which can disrupt blood sugar levels and affect hormonal balance, including thyroid hormones.

# Added Sugar

Added sugars such as refined sugar, dextrose, high-fructose corn syrup, and other sweeteners can cause sudden spikes in blood sugar levels. Since they offer little nutritional value, people with hyperthyroidism should limit or avoid them.

# Dairy Products

Some individuals with hyperthyroidism may experience lactose intolerance. If consuming dairy products like milk, cheese, ice cream, or yoghurt leads to symptoms such as indigestion, bloating, or fatigue, it is best to avoid or limit these foods.
