RBI Dividend Payout Norms: RBI has imposed a 75% limit on bank dividends. Now, before distributing profits, banks will have to strictly adhere to their financial health and regulatory rules. Learn about this new rule.

RBI Dividend Payout Norms: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued new and stricter rules regarding dividends paid by banks. These rules were announced on March 10, 2026, and will come into effect from the financial year 2026-27. This simply means that banks will no longer be able to distribute their entire profits to shareholders at will; instead, they will have to take special care of their financial health.

Why was the 75% cap imposed on dividends?

ANI reports that, according to new RBI rules, most commercial banks, small finance banks, and payment banks can now distribute a maximum of 75% of their net profit (PAT) as dividends. For local area banks and regional rural banks (RRBs), this limit has been set at 80%. This is to encourage banks to reserve a portion of their profits instead of distributing them entirely, to deal with any future financial crisis.

Can banks distribute profits at any time?

No, the RBI has imposed strict conditions. Banks can only distribute dividends if:

Their capital in the previous and current financial years is in accordance with regulatory rules.

The bank must have sufficient capital remaining after paying dividends.

The bank's net profit (Adjusted PAT) must be positive.

The bank must not be under any restrictions from the RBI.

What rules have changed for foreign banks?

Foreign banks operating as branches in India will also be required to comply with these rules to remit profits to their head offices. Furthermore, foreign banks' "Wholly Owned Subsidiaries" will now be treated at par with Indian banks and will be subject to the same 75% limit.

How much will the bank board's responsibility increase now?

The RBI has clarified that the bank board will be solely responsible for enforcing these rules. The board must ensure that it accurately assesses the bank's financial strength and future needs before paying dividends. Violations of these rules could result in heavy fines or strict action against banks.
