It is part of my job to know who fronts the most popular shows on TV but when it comes to MasterChef I am currently somewhat stumped. The show seems to have a revolving door of presenters since the furore surrounding previous hosts Gregg Wallace and John Torode saw them both axed. The latest victim of the current upheaval is Saturday Kitchen frontman Matt Tebbutt who was reportedly cut from MasterChef: The Professionals, Matt Tebbutt, after just one series. The 52-year-old star joined fellow judges Marcus Wareing and Monica Galetti at the helm of the BBC show last year.

According to reports, show bosses decided the show could continue with the culinary experts but without Matt as the main show host. For his part Matt conveniently issued a brief statement, stating this was always the plan, and he only ever intended to film one series of the BBC show.

"A lot of lovely people have contacted me about not doing the next series of MasterChef: The Professionals. I was only ever doing one series and I loved judging on it and will continue working with MasterChef," he penned on social media.

It is understood that producers at Banijay, who make the cooking show, do indeed plan to bring the Saturday Kitchen host back as a guest judge in the future, but it seems to prove that the show really should be put out to pasture at this stage.

MasterChef is a huge brand that extends far beyond the various incarnations of the TV show, and its international syndications. There is also a huge best-selling merchandise range, which includes everything from air fryers to chopping boards to digital thermometers and everything in between.

These products are best sellers and huge money spinners, but they completely rely on the goodwill generated by the show for sales.

The BBC are rapidly losing that as the constant shuffling of presenters is completely taking away from the merits of the show and is also incredibly unfair to contestants. It's easy to say it is all about the food, but the reality is you need a reliable and familiar presenter to hold it all together.

This means there is no consistency between the pro version and the other incarnations. Love them or hate them, this is something which John and Gregg brought to the show and the brand. MasterChef currently feels very diluted as a brand, and rather than flogging it to death, it would be best to let it end with some dignity while it still has a modicum of affection.
