New Delhi. Former England captain and cricket expert Michael Vaughan described South Africa as the stupidest team in the T20 World Cup 2026. He says that after defeating India in the Super-8, South Africa had a chance to oust India from the tournament, but they lost this opportunity.

India captured the title by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final. However, India had to face its only defeat in the tournament against South Africa in the Super-8.

According to Vaughan, after defeating India in the Super-8, South Africa had a golden opportunity to make a strategy and oust India. India’s net run rate dropped after the defeat, while West Indies kept their semi-final hopes alive with a big win over Zimbabwe. If West Indies had defeated South Africa, India’s path to the semi-finals would have become difficult.

But South Africa opened the doors of India’s semi-finals by defeating West Indies by 9 wickets. Michael Vaughan said in the ‘Stick to Cricket’ podcast, “The stupidest team in this tournament was South Africa. If they had let West Indies win, India would have been out. India’s victory chariot would have stopped there. They even rested some of their players after that match.”

51-year-old Vaughan further said, if you want to win the T20 World Cup, the easiest way is to eliminate the best team in the early stages itself. But South Africa did not do this and India won the title by registering consecutive wins.
