Freezing temperatures can lead to various issues for households in the UK, such as frozen pipes, boiler failures, condensation, and ultimately, mould. To minimise the risk of incurring expensive damage to your home, it is advisable to keep your house warm during the winter months.
However, with the energy price cap increasing in April, many people will be searching for strategies to lower their heating expenses - including figuring out the right time to turn off the thermostat for spring and summer. Switch it off too early, and you're left with cold evenings and the boiler firing back up regardless. Leave it running too long, and you're bleeding money into energy bills on a home that no longer needs it. Luckily, heating and roofing expert Alex Morrisey at Best Roofers, has shared the optimal spring cut-off window.
So when is the right time to turn off your heating? Alex claims that March 20th is a good target date for many households in the UK this year, but there's an "important caveat" to consider.
He explained: "Even though the days are getting sunnier by mid-March, overnight temperatures can still drop considerably.
"A good rule of thumb is to wait until daytime temperatures are consistently sitting around 12°C before turning the boiler off, and even then, be ready to switch it back on for colder evenings."
For most households, that point arrives around the end of March, when the clocks go forward and evenings start to lighten up.
Waiting until you really don't need it, rather than making a premature switch based on a sunny afternoon, is where the real savings on energy bills start.

Alex pointed out that the numbers make a compelling case for getting the timing right. Heating typically accounts for over 50% of a household's annual energy use, which means it represents the single biggest lever you can pull when trying to reduce bills.
He said: "Turn your heating off just 10 days earlier than usual, and you could reduce your monthly spring energy bills by 10 to 15%. Over the course of a year, that translates to a potential saving of between £100 and £300, depending on the size of your property and your energy tariff.
"People underestimate how much those extra days of unnecessary heating add up
"If you're running your boiler out of habit rather than actual need, you're paying for warmth your home doesn't require. Small timing adjustments can make a big difference to your annual bills."
The expert highlighted that the key is consistency. One warm week in March doesn't mean spring has arrived for good. Monitoring temperatures over several days, rather than reacting to a single mild afternoon, puts you in a much stronger position to make the switch at the right time.
