New Delhi: A window to acess health is the skin, along with its coat, the skin is the first organ that exhibits the health not only for human but also for every pet. Very often, when something is not normal inside the body, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, allergies, or even systemic disease it first reflects through the skin as conditions. Pets are delicate and cannot speak, hence they need much care and monitoring to keep up with their well-being.

Dhanu Roy, Founder, Right4Paws, says, Veterinary data suggests that 20–25 per cent of clinical visits in dogs and cats are related to dermatological issues, making skin problems one of the most common reasons pet parents visit the vet.

In India, this number is often higher due to factors like climate, parasites, diet inconsistency, and environmental exposure. Studies from Indian veterinary hospitals consistently show that skin disorders, ranging from infections and infestations to allergy-related dermatitis, are among the most frequently diagnosed in pets.

How to protect the skin health of pets

Many dermatological symptoms point to deeper issues; chronic itching or recurrent skin infections in cats may indicate underlying allergies or systemic conditions. In dogs, hormonal disorders such as Cushing’s disease often manifest as thinning skin, hair loss, and repeated infections. Kidney and liver dysfunctions can also manifest externally as dermatitis or poor coat quality. This makes skin and coat a very strong indicator of health.

Nutrition plays a critical role in health; deficiency of essential minerals and nutrients in pets can alter skin and coat quality, leading to dull fur, scaling or persistent irritation. Clinical research from India has evaluated serum mineral levels in dogs with dermatological disorders, highlighting links between micronutrient imbalances and skin health.

In short, that persistent itch, flaky skin, or lifeless coat isn’t just a surface-level issue. It’s your pet’s way of telling you something deeper needs attention. Skin problems in pets deserve more than a new shampoo-they deserve investigation, proper nutrition, and timely veterinary care.
