The central government has decided to cancel the National Security Act imposed on climate activist Sonam Wangchuk. The climate activist will now be released after being detained on 26 September 2025. This decision of the Central Government has been welcomed by Bharatiya Janata Party MP Damodar Aggarwal.

Speaking to news agency IANS, BJP MP Damodar Aggarwal welcomed the decision to cancel the NSA against Sonam Wangchuk and said, “This is a very commendable decision of the Central Government. I thank the Central Government and the Home Ministry for this. The general public wanted her (Sonam Wangchuk) to be released immediately.”

Let us tell you, protests started in Leh on 24 September 2025 regarding giving full statehood status to Ladakh and including it in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, in which violence also took place. During this period, four people lost their lives and about 90 people were injured. After this, on 26 September 2025, Sonam Wangchuk was arrested under NSA.

Sonam Wangchuk has spent almost half of the period of detention under NSA in jail. After his arrest on 26 September, he was shifted to Jodhpur Central Jail in Rajasthan on 27 September due to security reasons.

After this, on October 3, 2025, his wife Geetanjali Angmo filed a Habeas Corpus petition in the Supreme Court challenging the arrest. Then on October 10, 2025, during the first hearing in this case, the Supreme Court sought answers from the Center and Ladakh administration and issued notice.

On 16 February 2026, the Supreme Court asked for the medical report and raised questions on the video and documents that formed the basis of the detention. The case was listed in the Supreme Court more than 24 times in February and March. Then on March 14, 2026, the government removed the NSA imposed on Wangchuk.

According to the statement issued by the Home Ministry, the government is committed to creating an environment of peace, stability and mutual trust in Ladakh to facilitate constructive and meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders.
