Phil Campbell's Passing

Phil Campbell, the legendary guitarist known for his three-decade tenure with the hard rock band Motörhead, has sadly passed away at the age of 64. His family shared the heartbreaking news in a statement, revealing that Campbell died on March 13, 2026, following a lengthy health struggle after undergoing a "complex major operation." They mentioned that he was in intensive care post-surgery before he passed away peacefully. This announcement was made via the official Instagram account of Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons. Campbell joined Motörhead in 1984, a band that was originally founded by the late Lemmy Kilmister in 1975. He is survived by his wife, Gaynor Campbell, and their three sons: Todd, Dane, and Tyla.

The family’s statement regarding Phil Campbell's death expressed, "It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Philip Anthony Campbell, who left us peacefully last night after a long and brave fight in intensive care following a complex major operation. Phil was a dedicated husband, a fantastic father, and a proud grandfather, affectionately known as 'Bampi.' He was deeply cherished by everyone who knew him and will be sorely missed. His legacy, music, and the memories he created will endure forever. We kindly request that our family's privacy be honored during this incredibly challenging time."




Phil Campbell's Early Years

Before his time with Motörhead, Campbell was involved in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement and co-founded the band Persian Risk in 1979. He picked up the guitar at the age of 10, drawing inspiration from rock legends like Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, and Tony Iommi.



Defining Motörhead's Sound

Upon joining Motörhead, Campbell became an integral part of the band's distinctive heavy metal sound. He is celebrated for his guitar work on numerous iconic albums, including Orgasmatron (1986), 1916 (1991), Bastards (1993), Inferno (2004), and Bad Magic (2015). His powerful guitar playing was pivotal in shaping Motörhead's aggressive and fast-paced musical style, influencing countless heavy metal and hard rock artists.




Life After Motörhead

Throughout his career, Campbell contributed to 16 studio albums and remained with Motörhead until its disbandment in 2015, following the death of frontman Lemmy Kilmister. After Lemmy's passing, Campbell became the longest-serving member of the band. Following the end of Motörhead, he continued to perform with his family band, Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons, releasing albums such as The Age of Absurdity (2018), We’re the Bastards (2020), and Kings of the Asylum (2023). Additionally, he released a solo album titled Old Lions Still Roar in 2019.
