New Delhi: Cricket West Indies have confirmed that all its contingent of players and support staff have safely returned home from India where they were left stranded after conclusion of their T20 World Cup campaign due to a conflict in West Asia.
West Indies’ campaign ended when they lost to India in a group stage match on March 1 in Kolkata but global travel disruptions delayed their departure.
Closure of air space and airports at major transit points like Dubai meant they along with the South African team stayed put in Kolkata.
West Indies coach Darren Sammy and South African players Quinton de Kock and David Miller had expressed frustration at the delay in arranging flights and even accused the ICC of double standards for arranging England’s departure quickly.
ICC had rejected those allegations, insisting on safety and welfare of the players and members being its top priority, informing that the last batch of players departed on Thursday.
“The final group of players and support staff completed their journeys over the past several days and have now safely arrived at their respective destinations,” CWI said in a statement.
Nine West Indies players had left earlier in the week and the remaining 16 were put on commercial flights. CWI thanked the ICC and all other stakeholders for co-ordinate the return of the team contingent.
“We also thank West Indies fans and the wider cricketing community for their concern and well-wishes,” CWI said.
“The well-being and safety of our players and staff remain paramount, and we are grateful that the matter has now been brought to a safe and satisfactory conclusion.”
