If you're craving a lavish and immersive period drama, look no further than The Leopard on Netflix. The six-part miniseries transports viewers to 19th-century Sicily, where Deva Cassel, daughter of Monica Bellucci, takes centre stage.
Netflix's adaptation of a beloved Italian novel has left audiences captivated. From the opulent costumes to the stunning landscapes and central love triangle, it's a treat for the senses.
But there's more beneath the surface — for all its beauty, The Leopard delivers a blistering social commentary told through an aristocratic family's fall from power.
The series reimagines Italy's bestselling novel, Il Gattopardo by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, which naturally translates to 'The Leopard', a nickname given to the story's eponymous character, a Sicilian prince.
Its opening line reads: ""Dying for somebody or for something, that was perfectly normal, of course: but the person dying should know, or at least feel sure, that someone knows for whom or for what he is dying."
This enduring tale unfolds during a period of profound social transformation. In the latter half of the 1800s, Italy's unification was taking shape, and all this upheaval is witnessed through the perspective of the noble Corbera family.
"The Leopard tells the story of Don Fabrizio Corbera, Prince of Salina (Kim Rossi Stuart), a Sicilian nobleman whose family weathers the changing tides of Italian life during Garibaldi's conquest," reads the show synopsis.
"When the Redshirts arrive in Palermo, Corbera and his family flee to his Donnafugata estate, where their situation quickly becomes precarious. As times change, the Corbera family will have to adapt to survive - or die on the vine."
Reviews for the Italian period drama have been largely favourable. It boasts a 73% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.3 out of 10 star score on IMDB.
Both viewers and critics have praised the show for its breathtaking visuals, high production values and substance.
"[The Leopard] is sumptuous, sensuous, emotionally tempestuous and full of nice food; all qualities our homegrown costume drama tends to lack," penned The Guardian.
The review continued: "The Leopard's sultry good looks will make you swoon, but this beady-eyed examination of how the ruling classes navigate regime change has plenty of substance too.
"I just watched the whole series and loved every minute of it," enthused one viewer. "This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen on TV. The landscape, architecture, costumes, music, cinematography and general art direction is a divine feast. The characters were captivating. Benedetta Porcaroli is my new movie star girlfriend."
Netflix's 2025 miniseries follows in the steps of the classic film adaptation of the novel from 1968.
The Leopard is available to stream on Netflix.
