Jonathan Ross admits “I feel a little ashamed” as he shared a candid career insight. The 65-year-old began working as a host in television in 1987 when he launched The Last Resort with Jonathan Ross on Channel X.

He later went on to present the hugely popular Friday Night with Jonathan Ross on BBC One between 2001 and 2010. The show saw Jonathan speaking with guests such as David Bowie, Gary Lineker, and Jackie Chan.

A year after leaving the BBC, Jonathan launched The Jonathan Ross Show on rival broadcaster ITV One. On the By The Way podcast, Jonathan admits he feels “lucky” to have interviewed icons such as Lou Reed and Bowie.

The star however admits that sometimes he felt as though he “didn’t do a good job” in interviews. He made the admission after being asked how it feels to reflect on his career.

He said: “It depends what angle you’re reflecting from. Sometimes I’ll think about it and I’m a little angry or a little ashamed even in that I didn’t do a good job, I’ll feel angry that I handled it without being aware how lucky I was to have that person there and I did it to make a fun moment on TV and did jokey stuff when actual fact I'm thinking, ‘You know what, I should have just let them talk because people really wanted to hear what they say’.

“Earlier on I used to inject myself more in the interviews and partly that was the nature of the show we were doing so it was a requirement of it but still you know, you think, ‘Why didn’t I go there, or there, or there’.

“But other times if I’m being more generous on myself I think how amazing, how lucky that my career has allowed me to spend time just talking to those people even briefly, particularly people whose work I’ve loved and admired."

Jonathan will present coverage of the 98th Academy Awards for ITV and ITVX this evening. It is the third consecutive year that ITV has aired the glamorous awards ceremony.

The special programme will also include live coverage from the Oscars red carpet with Ross King and Angelique Jackson reporting live from the Dolby Theatre immediately followed by the main awards ceremony.

Ahead of the show, Jonathan revealed he believes it will be a “toss up” for which film wins the coveted Best Picture. Speaking on The One Show, he said: “I think Best Picture is going to be a toss-up between One Battle After Another or Sinners.

"I think Sinners will do better in the States than it did here because at its heart it is set in America, it's sort of an American story and it is an important story of American times. One Battle After Another was a very interesting and timely film as well.

"I suspect Michael Jordan will probably get Best Actor over there and I think thoroughly deserved. I think Jessie Buckley will probably get Best Actress for her role in Hamnet."

The Oscars Live will air from 10.15pm on ITV One and ITVX
