New Delhi: World no. 2 Jannik Sinner scripted history by becoming the youngest player to complete the set of hard-court trophies after beating Daniil Medvedev in the men’s singles final of the Indian Wells on Sunday, March 15. Sinner beat the Russian 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (7-4) in straight sets to clinch the title, ending a perfect campaign.
Sinner didn’t drop a single set on his way to lifting the crown. On Sunday, he started favourites against a resurgent Medvedev, who downed world no.1 Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinal to book a showdown with the Italian in the final clash. Despite an intense battle, Sinner managed to wrap up the final in straight sets inside two hours.
Sinner only lost four points in the game and didn’t face a single break point in the final against the Russian. With his triumph at Indian Wells, Sinner completed the rare feat of a hard-court Super Set. The Italian has won both hard-court Grand Slams – the Australian Open (2024) and the US Open (2024).
He has also won all six hard court Masters 1000 titles at the Miami Open, Shanghai Masters, Paris Open, Toronto Open, Cincinnati Open and the Indian Wells. He has also won the season-ending ATP Finals, thus completing the full set of nine hard-court trophies.
Sinner has become only the third player, after the legendary duo of Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, to complete the hard-court Super Set. The 24-year-old is the youngest to achieve the remarkable feat, making his achievement even more special.
While Djokovic, Federer, and now Sinner have won all eight hard-court titles across Grand Slams and tours, Andre Agassi won five Masters 1000 events, both hard-court Grand Slams and the ATP Finals. However, he missed out on becoming the first to complete the Super Set by missing out on one title.
