Anyone who has flown with Ryanair will know the drill. The airline is famous for its bargain plane tickets, especially if you're organised enough to book well ahead of time. But when it comes to generous hand luggage allowance, it's another story entirely.
Even though Ryanair tweaked its luggage policy towards the end of 2025, the free bag size is still pretty small. And seasoned travellers will know the sinking feeling: if your bag is even slightly too big, you could be slapped with a last-minute fee at the airport. Not exactly the cheeriest way to kick off a trip.
The simplest way to dodge that dreaded check-in desk moment is to make sure your bag fits the rules before you leave the house. But if you prefer travelling with a wheelie bag, it can be surprisingly tricky to find one that fits. Handles and wheels count towards the measurements, and they're often the very thing that nudges a bag over the limit.
Which is why one bag on Amazon caught our eye. We found a hard-shell cabin bag from Aerolite that's designed to fit Ryanair's free luggage allowance, and right now it's more than half price as part of the Amazon Spring Deal Days. But, the sale ends tonight meaning this discount will likely vanish.
Ryanair's free bag allowance recently shifted from 40 x 20 x 25cm to 40 x 30 x 20cm. On paper, that sounds like a nice little boost. In reality, it's a bit of a shuffle. You lose 10cm in length one way but gain 5cm in another, so there isn't a huge amount of extra wiggle room overall. Of course, you can always bring more luggage by paying for Priority, but that's another cost added onto your trip.
That's where the Aerolite hard shell cabin bag comes in. It's sized to fit Ryanair's free allowance, but still has the easy glide of a wheelie bag, which is ideal if you'd rather not lug a bag through the airport. According to the brand, it was designed specifically for Ryanair passengers.
Right now, every colour is discounted in the Amazon sale. The black and pale pink are the cheapest at £26.99 and £24.99 respectively, down from £59.99. Teal, matte black and blue are also reduced, though those come in slightly higher at £27.99.
Of course, measurements on a product page are one thing. Real-world travel is another.
So rather than just taking the numbers at face value, we wanted to see how the bag performed in practice. Dublin-based reporter Fran volunteered to put it through its paces on a Ryanair flight between her home and London.
Fran's favourite thing about the bag was how it looked. "Many of the advertised Ryanair-friendly bags prioritise practicality over style," she said. "So I was excited to try the Aerolite hard case bag from Amazon."
Frequent Ryanair flyers will know the balancing act well, and Fran is no stranger to it. She regularly commutes between Dublin and London and has tried several bags over time.
"The plan was to test the Aerolite bag on a one-day work trip to Cardiff, making sure it could fit enough for an overnight trip plus my work essentials. In the past, I have found myself worried that the bags might be a bit too big. In the case of the Aerolite, I was concerned it might be too small," she said.
"The bag itself is incredibly compact, though the dimensions do take into account the handles and wheels."
On the outside, the case is simple enough: two top handles that can be strapped together for carrying, plus an extendable handle so it rolls smoothly through the airport. Inside, there's one main compartment - and that's where Fran ran into a small snag.
"I couldn't fit in my 15.6" laptop," she said. "Therefore, it was no good for a work trip unless I took a second bag for my laptop. As the case has a hard shell, there was absolutely no way I could squeeze my laptop inside (but I did test it with a 13.3" laptop and found that it just about fit in with clothes)."
If you don't usually travel with a laptop, that limitation may not matter. For a one-night trip, Fran was still able to pack what she needed, though she admitted it required a bit of careful planning and leaving a few items behind.
While she liked the protection the hard shell offered, she did feel the squeeze when it came to space. "Although the dimensions of the case meet Ryanair guidelines, you actually lose some storage to accommodate the wheels and handles," said Fran.
"These are tiny amounts, but given Ryanair's already tiny allowance, I found it made a huge difference."
Still, the bag did exactly what it promised when it mattered most. It slotted into the Ryanair sizer at the airport and fit neatly under the seat once onboard the flight.
"One of my favourite things about the Aerolite is how it looks. It's certainly more stylish than other bags I have tried in the past, and the hard shell means it wipes clean, so it's less prone to staining," said Fran.
"However, you do have to sacrifice packing space to accommodate the wheels and handles. Yes, having wheels is a great addition for transporting the bag, but I'm not entirely sure they are worth losing room inside. I prefer the expandable Hayayu bag, which has proved to be a workhorse since I got it, and has far more packing space than the Aerolite, despite being Ryanair dimensions."
