New Zealand is reshaping how international students move from study to work. From late 2026, two key changes will take effect: a brand-new short-term work visa and a broader Post Study Work Visa option.
Here’s what it really means if you’re planning to study or stay back in New Zealand.
The major change is a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa. It’s designed for students who finish their studies but don’t qualify for a longer Post Study Work Visa. Instead of leaving immediately, they’ll get a short window to find a job.
What you get:
To qualify, you’ll need to meet a few clear conditions:
On top of that:
Some courses are not eligible at all. These include English language, foundation, and bridging programmes.
This visa is helpful, but it comes with strict rules.
Also, timing matters. You’ll need to apply within 3 months of your student visa expiring.
This visa is really a bridge. The idea is simple. Use those six months to:
If that doesn’t happen, staying longer could be difficult.
Alongside the new short-term option, New Zealand is also expanding its Post Study Work Visa (PSWV). From late 2026, students who complete a Graduate Diploma (Level 7) will now be eligible.
To qualify under the updated system:
You’ll also need to provide:
Good news here. If your bachelor’s degree is from overseas, you won’t need an International Qualification Assessment, though authorities may still verify it.
Under this pathway:
And just like before, you can only get a Post Study Work Visa once.
Unlike the short-term visa, the PSWV is more flexible for families.
If you qualify, you can support:
Of course, standard immigration rules still apply.
New Zealand is trying to close a gap. Earlier, students who didn’t qualify for a Post Study Work Visa had very limited options. Now, they’ll at least get a short window to stay, work, and try their luck.
At the same time, the expanded PSWV gives Graduate Diploma students a clearer path to extend their stay.
If you’re planning to study in New Zealand, your course choice matters more than ever. It now directly affects how long you can stay and work after graduation.
And that decision could shape your entire immigration journey.
