It’s not often that you see the top brass of the opposition and a senior Union Minister sitting across the table, but that’s exactly what happened recently. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met with Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, and the reason was more than just a formal courtesy call.
The siblings weren’t there for political sparring. Instead, they were accompanied by a delegation from the Bus and Truck Body Makers Association. The meeting focused on some very real, ground-level issues that small-scale manufacturers in the transport sector have been facing.
A group of small truck and bus body builders, primarily from Rajasthan, had earlier approached Rahul Gandhi. They shared their struggles regarding new government regulations, rising fee structures, and technical standards that they feel are making it harder for small businesses to survive.
Recognizing the urgency, Rahul and Priyanka decided to take these concerns directly to the person who could make a difference—Nitin Gadkari.
The atmosphere of the meeting was reportedly professional and constructive. Nitin Gadkari, known for his “get it done” attitude, listened to the grievances of the association members. He assured the delegation that the ministry would look into the specific technical and financial hurdles they mentioned.
This isn’t the first time Gadkari has shown such openness. Just a few months ago, Priyanka Gandhi had a lighthearted exchange with him in Parliament about an appointment, to which he famously replied, “My doors are always open.”
In a political climate that often feels divided, seeing leaders cross party lines to address the problems of small-scale industries is a breath of fresh air. For the bus and truck body makers, having the Leader of the Opposition and a prominent MP like Priyanka Gandhi champion their cause—and having a Union Minister listen—is a significant step toward getting their issues resolved.
It’s a reminder that at the end of the day, governance is about people, not just parties.
