Indian cricket team’s chief selector and former veteran fast bowler Ajit Agarkar is once again in the center of discussion. After the historic title win of T20 World Cup 2026, reports are coming that Agarkar has put forward a big demand before the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). According to reports, Agarkar wants that in view of his successful tenure, he wants to be retained as the chief selector till the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Ajit Agarkar took charge of the selection committee in July 2023. Under his guidance, the Indian team has not only shown aggression on the field, but has also established its dominance in big ICC tournaments. Last year, before IPL 2025, the board had extended his tenure for one year but now his continuous international successes have further strengthened his claims. Team India now wants to completely focus on the 2027 mission and Agarkar wants to remain a part of this plan.

Agarkar expressed his desire to hold the command till the World Cup

According to a report in Times of India, Agarkar has formally requested the BCCI to extend his contract till the 2027 ODI World Cup. Sources say that preliminary discussions have taken place on this topic within the board. At present, BCCI does not see any other option of Agarkar’s stature and experience, who can maintain the continuity of the selection process. Although the name of a former cricketer from West Zone is in the news, no one seems to be able to match Agarkar’s successes.

Agarkar’s track record as chief selector

Ajit Agarkar’s journey as chief selector so far has been like a golden dream. During his tenure, Team India has completed a hat-trick of titles by winning T20 World Cup 2024, ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and now T20 World Cup 2026. Apart from this, the Indian team also reached the final of ODI World Cup 2023. His selection policy not only expressed confidence in the senior players but also made the team balanced by giving opportunities to the youngsters at the right time.
