Born on 20 March 1951 in Amritsar, Madan Lal made a place in the Indian team on the basis of his excellent performance in domestic cricket. He got a chance to play for Team India in June 1974. He got limited opportunities in the initial phase, but he tried to prove himself at every opportunity.

Madan Lal played a total of 39 matches in his Test career, in which he took 71 wickets. During 1976–77, he made his mark by taking 22 wickets in 12 Tests. After returning to the team in 1981, he performed brilliantly and took 12 wickets in just 3 matches. He also added 1,042 runs in batting, which included many important innings.

Contribution in ODI and World Cup

In ODI cricket, Madan Lal took 73 wickets in 67 matches. The year 1983 was the most memorable year of his career, when he played a big role in the team’s victory by taking 25 wickets in the World Cup. Apart from this, he also became the player to bowl the first ball in history in the Cricket World Cup 1975.

Dominance in domestic cricket

Madan Lal’s performance in first class cricket was excellent. He took 625 wickets in 232 matches and scored 10,204 runs. During this period, he has 22 centuries and 50 half-centuries in his name. He also proved his usefulness in Ranji Trophy by taking 5270 runs and 351 wickets.

After retiring from cricket, Madan Lal also played an important role as a coach and selector. He was the coach of India A team and later also joined the senior team. In this way he strengthened Indian cricket outside the field also.
