Manchester United have been informed that VAR concluded there was insufficient contact to award them a penalty in the build-up to Bournemouth's equaliser. Amad tumbled to the turf following a challenge from Adrien Truffert but appeals for another spot-kick were dismissed.

The Cherries left-back then found Ryan Christie and he stabbed past Senne Lammens to draw the match level after Bruno Fernandes' penalty moments earlier. United players were left furious at the decision to permit the goal due to the apparent foul at the other end.

The Premier League Match Centre on X have since delivered a verdict on the incident. Their post to social media read: "BOUMUN – 67' The referee's call of no penalty for a challenge by Truffert was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed the contact was not sufficient for a foul."

United subsequently regained the lead however, with Fernandes' corner inadvertently headed into his own net by James Hill. Further controversy ensued after that with Harry Maguire fouling Evanilson in the penalty box before being shown a straight red card for the denial of a goal-scoring opportunity.

Second half substitute Eli Junior Kroupi converted the resulting penalty. Michael Carrick turned to his bench following Maguire's dismissal with Ayden Heaven introduced to partner Leny Yoro.

Regarding the Maguire red card incident, the Premier League Match Centre on X wrote: "#BOUMUN – 78' The referee's call of penalty and red card for Maguire for the denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity (DOGSO) was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed to be a holding offence with no attempt to challenge for the ball."

United are already without Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt at the back and Carrick cannot select Maguire for their next clash against Leeds United. Fortunately, that fixture is not for three weeks with the injured pair potentially returning by then.

Maguire will only serve a one-match suspension and therefore will be available again for fixtures against Chelsea, Brentford and Liverpool.

United are arguably battling with all three of those sides for a place in next season's Champions League. Three positions appear to be up for grabs with Manchester City and Arsenal comfortably ahead of those.

Carrick's team could have closed to within four points of their competitors with a win at Vitality Stadium but will probably be content with a point given they had to play the final 20 minutes a man down.
