New Delhi: Paapa Essiedu, the new Severus Snape in HBO’s Harry Potter series, has revealed shocking death threats from fans upset over his casting. The British actor, known from Black Mirror and I May Destroy You, spoke openly about the online hate in a recent interview.

Despite the abuse, he says it fuels his passion for the role. This backlash highlights toxic fan reactions to changes in beloved franchises.

Essiedu’s shocking revelations

Paapa Essiedu shared his ordeal during an interview with The Sunday Times of London. He received direct threats like, “Quit, or I’ll murder you,” and saw Instagram messages saying, “I’m going to come to your house and kill you.” Essiedu admitted, “While I’m pretty sure I’m not going to be murdered… That could age badly! But, yes, while I hope I’ll be OK, nobody should have to encounter this for doing their job.”

He compared his situation to real-life dangers, adding, “Many people put their lives on the line in their work. I’m playing a wizard in Harry Potter. And I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t affect me emotionally.”  The actor, a childhood fan of J.K. Rowling’s books but not the original films starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, remains undeterred.

 Turning hate into motivation

Instead of backing down, Essiedu channels the negativity into strength. “But the abuse fuels me. And makes me more passionate about making this character my own,” he told the outlet. He reflected on his younger self, saying, “Because I think of how I felt as a kid. I would imagine myself at Hogwarts on broomsticks, and the idea that a kid like me can see themselves represented in that world? That’s motivation to not be intimidated by someone saying they’d rather I die instead of doing work I’m going to be really proud of.”

This determination comes amid widespread backlash since HBO announced the cast last year. Essiedu steps into the shoes of Alan Rickman, who iconically played Snape in the films.

Harry Potter series cast and details

HBO’s “faithful adaptation” features big names: John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. The series will explore every corner of the wizarding world, with each season adapting Rowling’s hit books. It is set to launch on HBO Max in 2027.

Essiedu’s story underscores the dark side of fandom, but his resolve promises a fresh take on Snape that could inspire young viewers worldwide.
