The number of people planning a cruise holiday has doubled over the last two years.

From the turquoise waters of Croatia to the dramatic Norwegian fjords, cruise holidays are riding a wave of popularity as Brits plan their 2026 adventures. Cruise holidays are booming among British travellers, with the percentage of people planning a cruise doubling over the past two years. New research from AllClear Travel Insurance, published by the Express, found that one in five UK holidaymakers (20%) plan to take a cruise in 2026, up sharply from just 9% in early 2024. The research was conducted for AllClear by UK Omnibus Group among a nationally representative sample of 2,000 adults between January and February 2026.

Garry Nelson, Head of Corporate Affairs at AllClear Travel Insurance, said: "Cruise holidays are likely to be benefiting from an overall upturn in holidaymaker confidence, which is robust despite obvious tensions in many parts of the world. Compared to AllClear data at the start of 2024, more UK adults are planning a holiday for 2026, 86% up from 70% two years ago.

"The allure of a cruise holiday in 2026 is strongest amongst Londoners (33%) and people that live in the North East (23%), Wales (23%) and the West Midlands (21%). Beyond those planning a cruise holiday this year, the AllClear data also points towards strong longer-term demand, with 69% of adults saying they are interested in considering a cruise holiday in the future."

Cruises are also proving popular among travellers with medical conditions, with 17% planning a cruise in 2026 and 81% saying they would consider one in the future.

He added: "Our research tells us that people with medical conditions are more likely than the national average to rate the importance of safety (37%) and quality (32%) when they are choosing their holidays abroad and this makes cruise holidays a natural choice for many.

"Overall, 2026 is set to see more people with medical conditions taking their holidays abroad (82% - up from 61% two years ago). As a specialist in this market, we recommend that holidaymakers ensure they have the comprehensive travel insurance before heading off on holiday - and to be sure they declare their medical conditions when buying cover. That way, people can have an enjoyable holiday abroad with peace of mind."
