MS Dhoni's retirement has been one of the hottest topics in the Indian Premier League for the last few years. He has faced the retirement question quite a few times, with MS dropping quotes during the tosses. Well MS Dhoni gave a practical reply on his retirement, even keeping things hanging.
On Sunday night, March 22, the Chennai Super Kings invited the South star Sivakarthikeyan in their pre-season grand event at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. In the packed stadium, Shiva echoed the crowd's emotion, made the obvious request, 'With your fitness, you can play till 60. It is easy.'
To this, Dhoni replied that his time is ending. The 44-year-old replied, 'It is on the way down, not the way up,' but then added, "I'll try" which made the fans roar with hope.
Notably, this time Dhoni’s reply avoided any definitive statement, maintaining the ambiguity that has come to define discussions around his IPL future.
The moment quickly drew attention as it combined a direct acknowledgment of physical realities with a line that stopped short of closing the door. While the setting was informal, the subject remained unchanged—Dhoni’s continuity in the league.

Presence Beyond Numbers Remains Central
Dhoni continues to remain a central figure for Chennai Super Kings, with his role extending beyond on-field contributions. His presence is closely tied to the franchise’s identity and its engagement with supporters, particularly during pre-season events like ROAR 2026.
Before the season unfolded, he felicitated his teammates Shivam Dube, Sanju Samson and Ayush Mhatre for winning ICC trophies.
In the Indian Premier League, Dhoni recently became CSK’s highest run-scorer, overtaking Suresh Raina with 4,865 runs for the franchise, contributing to his overall tally of 5,439 IPL runs. While his role has evolved, his impact hasn’t diminished. In IPL 2024, he scored 161 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 220.55, often finishing games unbeaten. The following season, he added 196 runs and even briefly returned to captaincy after Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury.
Dhoni’s legacy is built on unmatched leadership, guiding CSK to five IPL titles and maintaining a win rate above 60%. Heading into 2026, he is expected to take on a mentor-cum-finisher role, possibly featuring as an Impact Player while continuing to shape the team’s future.
