Matt Fitzpatrick is eager to be reunited with his wife, Katherine, following his triumph at the Valspar Championship on Sunday. The Britis expected to climb into the top 10 after securing his third PGA Tour victory and claiming the seven-figure top prize.

He remained bogey-free over the weekend on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida. His three-under-par closing round of 68 took him to 11 under for the tournament, finishing one stroke ahead of David Lipsky.

The pair were level when Fitzpatrick reached the 72nd hole, but the 31-year-old struck a low drive down the centre of the fairway before sinking a mid-range birdie putt. Lipsky couldn't match his opponent, ending one stroke behind as a result.

The display was particularly impressive as Fitzpatrick battled through the "glacial" pace of play from his playing partner, who was issued an official warning from tour officials. The Sheffield pro took the top prize of $1.64m (£1.23m) from the $9.1m (£6.8m) purse.

He has been travelling extensively in recent weeks, competing in the Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players and the Valspar consecutively, and he confessed he couldn't wait to be back with his wife. Prior to his interview with NBC on the 18th green at Innisbrook, Fitzpatrick FaceTimed both Katherine and his parents to celebrate the victory.

"Obviously, [they are] so excited," he said shortly afterwards. "I've not seen Katherine for three weeks, so I'm so excited to get back and see her, and my parents are coming out in a week or so as well... It's just such special people in my life and, yeah, just so excited to share this with them."

The Fitzpatricks are based in Jupiter, Florida, meaning the 2022 U.S. Open champion wasn't too far from home. However, Katherine recently revealed they were relocating and she had been left sorting the packing while her husband was "golfing with his friends."

Fitzpatrick's triumph came as little shock. He arrived at the tournament in red-hot form following his gut-wrenching runner-up finish at The Players seven days earlier, when he was pipped to the title by Cam Young at TPC Sawgrass.

Over the last six months, he's been among the most reliable performers across all circuits, emerging from a difficult patch before delivering an outstanding display at the Ryder Cup. Several weeks after that, he captured the DP World Tour Championship title.

The devastation at The Players simply intensified his determination. "I think the big thing was I felt like I was playing well," he said. "I was playing well going into this week, obviously wanted to continue that, and I felt like I had confidence in myself to do so.

"Then to do that over four rounds was special this week." Fitzpatrick confessed he wasn't especially assured as he lined up his 14-foot birdie attempt on the final hole but unleashed an enormous fist pump as it dropped into the cup.

"I'll be honest, it wasn't an ideal putt," he admitted. "It was a nice right-to-lefter, but me and my putting coach, Phil [Kenyon], have been working on trying to have less acceleration in my stroke, and it comes out more on the uphillers.

"So I wouldn't say I was overly keen on it, given my putting performance today. But yeah, to get it done like that was special."
