A New Title for Mothers

On March 21, the UAE marked Mother's Day with a significant announcement from Dubai's Crown Prince, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed. He declared the retirement of the term 'housewife' in favor of 'Generation Shaper'. In a heartfelt message, he expressed, "Mothers serve as the first educators for their children, instilling values of belonging and responsibility that are essential for building strong nations. Today, in honor of Mother’s Day, we have instructed the Community Development Authority to adopt the title 'Generation Shaper' to acknowledge a role that transcends mere words. To all mothers, thank you for being the cornerstone of all that is good. Happy Mother’s Day."

This initiative by the UAE is more than just a symbolic gesture; it aims to challenge long-standing perceptions that view women's roles at home as secondary or unimportant. A report from the International Labour Organization highlights that women globally engage in 16 billion hours of unpaid care work daily, encompassing tasks such as cleaning, cooking, and caring for children and the elderly. The absence of this unpaid labor would bring society to a standstill.

What is the economic significance of this unpaid care work? According to UN Women, if the unpaid work of women were to be quantified, it could surpass 40% of GDP in certain nations, overshadowing entire industries like manufacturing and transportation. Yet, this crucial labor remains largely unrecognized in national statistics and budgets, contributing to poverty and inequality worldwide, with lasting effects on women.

In India, there is a growing recognition of the economic and social contributions of homemakers. Recently, the Delhi High Court dismissed the notion that non-earning spouses are economically inactive, stating, "A homemaker does not 'sit idle'; she performs labor that enables the earning spouse to function effectively." Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma noted that the role of a spouse managing the household should not be overlooked simply because it does not generate income or appear in financial records. The court has redefined homemaking as a form of labor with legal and economic importance, especially in maintenance and financial support cases post-separation.

These symbolic changes, along with Sheikh Hamdan's push for the term 'Generation Shaper', signify a shift in attitudes towards domestic roles. However, there is still a long journey ahead before women receive the recognition they deserve. It is high time that the value of unpaid domestic work is acknowledged and afforded the dignity it rightfully deserves.
